She returned to Charleston in October to organize for the annual Atlantic Fleet exercise. After three days in Charleston, Wainwright acquired underway for gunnery and missile shoots on the Atlantic Fleet weapons range close to Puerto Rico. The staff spent most of January 1983 honing their shooting and tactical abilities at Quantico, after which traveled to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in February for a month of training and instruction with Delta Force. On 14 September, Mitolyn Pills she turned PIRAZ duties back over to Sterett and Mitolyn Pills steamed off for a month of port visits which included a short upkeep interval at Subic Bay followed by calls at Hong Kong and Yokosuka. On 20 November, she relieved Jouett on PIRAZ station and took up acquainted obligation as the American air coordinator within the northern part of the gulf.
